Are these notification sounds really royalty-free?

Yes. "Royalty-free" means you pay nothing up front and owe nothing later, no per-use fees, no revenue share, no recurring licensing costs. Download a sound, use it, ship it. You never pay us a cent.

What you're allowed to do

Under CC BY 4.0 you are free to:

Use the sounds in personal and commercial projects.
Share them (copy and redistribute the audio in any format).
Adapt them (trim, remix, layer, or build on them to make something new).

There's no cap on how many you use, no seat limit, and no separate "commercial license" to buy. The same free license covers a hobby app and a product shipping to millions.

Where you can use them

Apps and games, YouTube videos, podcasts, Twitch and streaming overlays, films and animations, presentations, e-learning, on-hold and IVR systems, hardware and IoT devices, websites - anywhere you need a notification, alert, or message tone. Commercial use in all of the above is fine.

The one condition: give credit

CC BY 4.0 asks for attribution. In practice that means, wherever it's reasonable for your medium, include a credit that:

names the source - notificationsounds.com
links back to us (to the specific sound's page if you can, otherwise the homepage is fine)
notes if you modified the sound.

Where a visible credit genuinely isn't possible for your medium (say, a short alert tone inside a device with no about screen), put the attribution wherever you keep your other third-party notices - a licenses file, a colophon, or your app's acknowledgements.

Do I need an account, email, or sign-up?

No. There's nothing to register for and no email wall. Every sound downloads directly in MP3, M4R (for iPhone), and OGG.

Who makes these sounds?

Every sound here is original and made in-house - some built from scratch on digital and analogue synthesizers, others crafted by shaping original audio recordings. Nothing is scraped, resold from a stock library, or AI-generated from someone else's work. That's why we can license them cleanly: they're ours to license, and have been since the site began in 2008. It also means the CC BY 4.0 grant is solid, as you're getting the license directly from the person who made the sound.

A few honest clarifications

CC BY 4.0 is not the same as "no attribution." If your project truly cannot include any credit anywhere, this license isn't a fit - but for the overwhelming majority of uses, a one-line credit is trivial.
You don't need our permission on top of the license. The license is the permission. You don't have to email us or wait for a reply.
The license is irrevocable as long as you follow its terms - so a sound you use today stays licensed to you even if the site changes later.
We're not lawyers, and this page is a plain-language summary. The legally binding terms are the CC BY 4.0 license text. If anything here and the license text seem to disagree, the license text governs.

Questions

Can I use a sound in an app I sell on the App Store or Google Play? Yes, commercial use is covered. Just include the credit in your app's licenses/acknowledgements screen.

Can I monetize the YouTube video the sound is in? Yes. Put the credit in the description.

Can I edit the sound? Yes, trim it, change its pitch, layer it. Just note that you modified it in your credit.

Do I have to pay for high-volume or enterprise use? No. There is no volume tier and no enterprise license. It's free at any scale.

Can I redistribute the sounds? The license permits redistribution with attribution. We'd simply ask that you don't rehost the whole library as a competing download site, but link to us freely and use the sounds anywhere.
